Punjab proposes paid internships for graduates to assist in anti-smog efforts

The Punjab government, under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has initiated the Chief Minister Climate Leadership Development Internship Programme titled “Mera Punjab Smog Free.” This program aims to combat smog and promote environmental improvement across the province by engaging young graduates in community service initiatives.

In her statement, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the collective responsibility to permanently eliminate smog. The internship is open to graduates who have completed their degrees within the last two years, offering them a monthly stipend of Rs25,000. The initiative seeks to empower youth through practical environmental work while providing them with a platform to contribute meaningfully to society.

Registration for the internship program is open until July 20, 2024, and applicants aged between 18 and 25 years are eligible. Upon completion of the internship, participants will receive a ‘Community Service Certificate’ in recognition of their contributions.

CM Maryam Nawaz urged public support for government efforts in combating smog, encouraging actions such as tree plantation, reducing vehicle and factory emissions, minimizing plastic use, and avoiding crop residue burning. She also expressed appreciation for the Pakistan Flour Mills Association’s decision to call off their strike in Punjab, hoping for continued cooperation to address issues affecting flour millers in the region.
