Rising petroleum prices may soon lead to an increase in Metro Bus fares across Punjab, potentially adding financial pressure on daily commuters who rely on the service.
Authorities are reviewing the impact of the recent fuel price surge on government subsidies used to operate the Metro Bus system. The higher cost of fuel has significantly increased operational expenses.
Officials are reportedly considering a proposal to raise fares by Rs10 for Metro Bus services operating in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. The move is aimed at reducing the growing financial burden on the provincial government.
If approved, the proposed fare increase could take effect from March 26. However, officials have clarified that the proposal is still under discussion and no final decision has been made yet.
Currently, commuters using the Metro Bus services in these cities pay a flat fare of Rs30. Any increase would directly affect thousands of passengers who use the service daily for work, education, and other travel needs.
A spokesperson for the Metro Bus system confirmed that discussions are ongoing and that a final announcement regarding fare adjustments will be made once a decision is finalized.
The possible fare hike comes about a week after the federal government increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre amid supply concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East.
Following the adjustment, petrol prices jumped from Rs266.17 per litre to Rs321.17 per litre, while diesel prices increased from Rs280.86 per litre to around Rs336 per litre.
The sharp rise in fuel prices reflects broader energy challenges facing the country and has already triggered concerns about rising transportation costs and inflation.
