Punjab Introduces Mandatory Board Exams for Junior Grades

The Punjab Education Department has announced that board-level exams will now be compulsory for 5th and 6th-grade students across the province. These exams will be conducted by the Punjab Education Curriculum Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA).

The decision comes after a review of recent 9th and 10th-grade board exam results, which officials found unsatisfactory. Authorities believe that earlier exposure to standardized exams will better prepare students academically and cognitively, leading to improved performance in higher classes.

School heads have been instructed to start preparations immediately and submit academic improvement plans aligned with the new exam structure.

However, the Punjab Teachers’ Union has criticized the move, recalling past failures of similar policies at the primary level. They argue that instead of rolling out new measures without consultation, the department should develop a consistent, long-term strategy for educational assessment and teaching.

The new policy is set to be implemented this academic year, though concerns remain about its execution and effect on students.
