Punjab Makes Job Letters Mandatory for Domestic Workers

The Punjab government has introduced a landmark rule requiring employers to provide a Letter of Employment to all domestic workers serving in households across the province.

Under the new labour law, domestic workers are now guaranteed several important rights, including a minimum monthly salary of Rs. 40,000, paid annual and maternity leave, and double wages for overtime work.

As per the regulations, no household can employ domestic help without issuing a formal employment letter that clearly defines the worker’s duties, conditions, and terms of service.

To resolve disputes between workers and employers, Dispute Resolution Committees will be set up at the union council level.

The law further ensures a safe, clean, and respectful work environment, offering protection against exploitation and ensuring access to maternity benefits for all domestic workers in Punjab.
