Punjab is moving forward with extensive prison reforms, allocating Rs 28 billion for multiple development projects. These initiatives aim to modernize the prison system and improve inmate facilities across the province.
A recent high-level meeting, chaired by Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi, reviewed the progress of 38 prison reforms projects. Out of these, 34 are ongoing, and four are newly launched. So far, Rs 9 billion has been spent on these reforms.
The prison reforms include constructing new prisons, upgrading barracks, improving medical facilities, renovating kitchens, and building visitor sheds. The Lahore Prison Complex, a major project under the reforms, is estimated to cost Rs 6 billion and will house 10,000 inmates. Meanwhile, a new district jail in Sialkot is being built for Rs 4.8 billion with a capacity of 2,000 prisoners.
Dr. Qazi emphasized the importance of transparency and quality in implementing prison reforms. He stated that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is closely monitoring these projects to ensure timely and effective results.
The meeting also highlighted a rehabilitation-focused approach. Dr. Qazi reminded officials to “hate the crime, not the criminal” and urged jail authorities to prepare for dengue prevention during the monsoon season.
Furthermore, the Home Secretary reiterated a strict zero-tolerance policy on corruption in all prison reforms activities. Officials must strictly follow the Home Department’s guidelines to maintain integrity throughout the process.
The meeting included senior officials such as Inspector General of Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir and Additional Secretary Prisons Asim Raza. Regional DIGs and jail superintendents also participated via video conference.
Punjab’s prison reforms reflect a strong commitment to improving correctional facilities and inmate welfare, marking significant progress in the province’s justice system.
