Punjab Issues Update on Women Driving Licenses

The issuance of driving licences to women saw a remarkable surge in 2025, with more than 248,000 women benefiting from licensing services across Punjab. Official statistics indicate a 42 percent rise in licences issued to women compared to the previous year, highlighting growing participation and improved access to driving facilities.

During the year, over 183,000 women received car driving licences, reflecting a strong increase in female drivers on the roads. The data also shows that around 61,000 women were issued motorcycle driving licences, while 1,833 women successfully obtained Light Transport Vehicle (LTV) licences. In addition, 240 women were granted rickshaw driving licences, and 150 women received licences for commercial heavy vehicles, marking progress in non-traditional driving sectors.

According to the DIG Traffic, women made up 86 percent of all motorcycle licences issued in 2025, while their share in car driving licences stood at 32 percent. The figures also reveal that more than 10,000 women applied for and received duplicate driving licences during the year, indicating increased engagement with formal licensing systems.

The department further reported that over 77,000 women renewed their driving licences in 2025, while more than 2,000 women obtained commercial driving licences. These commercial permits have enabled many women to explore new employment opportunities and achieve greater financial independence.

To enhance convenience and accessibility, licensing services are now being provided directly at women’s doorsteps through Pink Vans. DIG Traffic Muhammad Waqas Nazir stated that special facilities have also been set up exclusively for women, including the Aabshar Centre in Lahore and a Women Enclave Centre in Gujranwala.
