The Punjab government has introduced a new digital system that allows prisoners to meet their families virtually, eliminating the need for in-person visits. The initiative aims to make the visitation process more convenient, secure, and accessible for both inmates and their loved ones.
According to an official notification issued by the Home Department, special centers will be set up inside jails across Punjab to facilitate online meetings. These centers will be equipped with digital tools to help prisoners communicate with their families through video calls. The department has also directed prison authorities to display awareness banners about the new facility in all jails.
Officials confirmed that families will soon be able to use a dedicated mobile application to connect with inmates. However, specific details about the app’s name, features, and launch date have not yet been disclosed. The move comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to digitalize public services and improve conditions within correctional facilities.
Authorities stated that this step will reduce the administrative burden of physical visits, improve prison management, and allow families living far away to stay in touch with their loved ones more easily. The system will also help maintain better security within prisons by minimizing crowding and potential disruptions during visiting hours.
This initiative reflects Punjab’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its prison system through technology. By offering a safer and more efficient communication method, the province aims to strengthen family connections while ensuring better oversight and discipline inside jails.
