Punjab Introduces Major Reforms to Matric and Inter Exams

The Board Committee of Chairmen (BOC) of all nine educational boards in Punjab has approved major reforms to the exams system, ending the traditional manual methods of paper marking and monitoring for matriculation and intermediate annual exams.

Under the new framework, biometric attendance will be mandatory for all students appearing in exams. From 2026, students registering for Class 9 and Class 11 will need to provide thumb impressions. These will be used for biometric verification and entry into exam centers. Government and private schools are responsible for arranging the necessary biometric devices and laptops, while examination boards will provide the required software.

A significant change involves shifting to digital paper marking. Answer sheets will now be scanned and marked on computer screens, aiming to reduce errors, calculation mistakes, and ensure transparency in exams.

Science practical exams have also been upgraded to ensure proper evaluation instead of being treated as a formality. This year, reforms will be partially implemented, beginning with biometric registration for Class 9 and Class 11 students.

CCTV cameras will be mandatory at all exam centers for enhanced monitoring. In Rawalpindi Division, authorities have already installed cameras at 400 matric and intermediate exam centers, funded by students.

Officials say these reforms will modernize the exams process, improve accountability, and provide a fairer evaluation system. By digitizing marking, implementing biometric attendance, and enhancing security, Punjab aims to ensure that exams are transparent, accurate, and reliable for students, teachers, and parents alike.
