Punjab's Major Public Hospitals Struggle To Contain Germ Outbreaks

A recent report by the Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC) has raised serious concerns about infection control in public hospitals across the province. The report shows that many hospitals are failing to maintain proper hygiene, leading to dangerous levels of bacterial and viral contamination.

The PHC evaluated 17 major hospitals in Punjab. Most were found lacking in basic infection prevention practices. These failures put patients at high risk of infections and complications during treatment.

Several large hospitals in Lahore, including Mayo Hospital, Jinnah Hospital, and Services Hospital, were flagged for poor hygiene. The same issues were seen in other cities, such as Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi, Allied Hospital in Faisalabad, and Nishtar Hospital in Multan.

The report also listed other underperforming facilities, including Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital, Children’s Hospital Faisalabad, and Faisal Masood Hospital in Sargodha. Tests in operation theatres, wards, and on medical tools revealed widespread contamination.

Despite the concerning findings, four hospitals did receive a satisfactory rating. These included Lahore General Hospital, Children’s Hospital Lahore, and Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology. Sixteen hospitals were marked as needing improvement but were not in the worst category.

Health experts say the results are alarming. They warn that infection in hospitals can lead to serious illness, longer recovery times, and even death. Poor hygiene also increases the burden on already stretched healthcare services.

The PHC has called for urgent action. They suggest immediate staff training, regular cleaning audits, and stronger enforcement of safety rules. The commission says clean and safe hospitals are essential to protect patients and improve public trust in healthcare.

This report is a strong reminder of the need to improve health standards and protect patients in all public hospitals across Punjab.
