Punjab Govt Gives 15-Day Deadline to Surrender Illegal Weapons

The Punjab government has launched an extensive crackdown on illegal weapons and arms smuggling through new legislation and advanced policing methods. Chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the high-level meeting approved the Punjab Surrender of Illegal Arms Act 2025, aimed at restoring law and order across the province.

Under the new act, individuals possessing illegal arms have been given 15 days to surrender them. The campaign will unfold in three stages — voluntary surrender, destruction of illegal weapons, and strict enforcement of new arms laws. Additionally, the government will re-verify over one million licensed firearms to confirm their authenticity and ownership. Federal arms licenses issued in Punjab will also undergo cross-verification.

A major innovation under the plan is the introduction of drone policing in Lahore. The project will enhance real-time surveillance, help police reach crime scenes swiftly, and monitor high-risk zones. Modern weapon scanners will also be installed at 14 provincial entry and exit points to intercept smuggled weapons.

Private security companies will now operate under tighter regulations, linking guards to the Punjab Police Helpline 15 through a panic button system. Only authorized security personnel and police officers will be permitted to carry weapons.

Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar stated that surrendered weapons will be destroyed under CCD supervision and warned of strict action against anyone retaining illegal arms. Offenders face up to 14 years in prison and fines of up to Rs. 3 million.

Officials noted a 70% overall drop in crime, including major reductions in murder, robbery, and vehicle theft, crediting improved coordination through the newly formed Crime Control Department.
