Punjab Govt Introduces Garbage Tax Under ‘Suthra Punjab’ Campaign

The Punjab government has introduced a garbage tax under the “Suthra Punjab” (Clean Punjab) initiative, starting with upscale and commercial areas after cabinet approval.

In urban areas, a 5-marla house will pay Rs300, while in villages the rate is Rs200. Houses between 5 and 10 marlas will be charged Rs500 in cities but remain Rs200 in rural areas. For 10 marla to 1 kanal houses, the tax is Rs1,000 in cities and Rs400 in villages. Houses between 2 and 4 kanals will pay Rs2,000, and those above 4 kanals Rs5,000, whereas rural homes above 2 kanals will only be charged Rs400.

Shopkeepers and offices will also be taxed. Small shops in cities will pay Rs500 and in villages Rs300. Medium shops will be charged Rs1,000 in cities and Rs700 in villages, while large commercial centers face Rs3,000 in cities and Rs2,000 in rural areas.

The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has begun implementing the tax, with billing and collection handled by its revenue and operations teams.
