Punjab Governor Calls PPP-PML-N Alliance a Compulsion, Not Love

Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has described the alliance between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as a partnership formed out of necessity rather than affection.

During his recent statement, the governor said that the coalition was not based on love or ideology but was instead a political compulsion in the current national context. He added that even minor irresponsibility from any side could destabilize the system and harm the democratic process.

According to Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, both parties are navigating a challenging phase where political cooperation is essential for maintaining stability. He noted that, while differences exist, unity among democratic forces is crucial to prevent any institutional imbalance or disruption.

The Punjab governor emphasized that political maturity demands patience and dialogue, even among rivals. “This alliance may not be ideal, but it’s necessary to keep the system running,” he reportedly remarked.

The partnership between PPP and PML-N — two of Pakistan’s major political rivals for decades — has been viewed as an unusual but strategic move to manage governance challenges and economic uncertainty. Analysts believe the alliance was formed primarily to ensure political continuity and prevent administrative deadlock.

In recent months, both parties have been sharing responsibilities at the federal and provincial levels, though internal tensions over decision-making and policy direction remain visible. Yet, as the governor noted, the bigger picture remains the protection of Pakistan’s democratic institutions.

Such political collaborations are not new to Pakistan’s political landscape. History shows that alliances often arise in response to crises or shifting political dynamics. Experts say that maintaining this partnership will require consistent communication and mutual respect among leaders.

While addressing reporters, the governor also warned against spreading political chaos. He said that any attempt to undermine the alliance could derail the ongoing governance framework, stressing that “responsibility lies with everyone whether in government or opposition.”

Earlier, Pakistan had also reminded Afghanistan to fulfill promises made under the Doha agreement another instance of Islamabad urging commitment and accountability in regional affairs. Pakistan’s reminder to Afghanistan highlights a similar theme of upholding trust and cooperation, which echoes through domestic politics as well.
