Punjab is facing its most severe flooding in almost 40 years. Heavy monsoon rains and water released by India have worsened the situation.
In Jhang district, a major flood surge has entered the River Chenab. Authorities have placed all departments on high alert. In Athara Hazari tehsil, officials are warning shopkeepers near embankments to evacuate. They fear the need to breach protective bunds, like during the 2014 floods, to ease water pressure.
The River Ravi remains in a very high flood state. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), water flow has crossed 202,000 cusecs at Ravi Siphon and 201,000 cusecs at Shahdara. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
In Multan, the administration decided to breach two embankments to protect the city. Lahore also faces growing danger, with Ravi’s flow expected to cross 200,000 cusecs. The river can handle up to 250,000 cusecs, but the level continues to rise. Rescue teams and boats have been deployed. Evacuations from low-lying areas are underway.
Punjab’s Commissioner in Lahore confirmed that Ravi Siphon’s flow has stabilized. Stabilization at Shahdara is expected soon. However, evacuations continue as a precaution.
Federal Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said at least 12 people have died in flood-related incidents in Punjab. She confirmed that all government agencies remain on high alert.
In Bahawalpur, embankments in Yousafwala and Ahmadwala broke due to pressure from the Sutlej River. Floodwaters submerged nearby settlements and damaged hundreds of acres of crops. Erosion along the riverbank has also left many families stranded.
In Sargodha, 600,000 cusecs of water entered the River Chenab at Kot Momin. Officials warn that the flow could reach 1 million cusecs. The district administration is fully prepared for emergency response.
Meanwhile, Rojhan is bracing for another flood surge from the Indus River. Local authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to evacuate. Tent villages are being set up for displaced families.
Punjab remains on high alert as fresh rain alerts have been issued for cities including Lahore, Islamabad, and Sialkot.
