The Punjab Education authorities have announced a major change in the evaluation of practical examinations across all boards in the province. The new policy introduces a centralised marking system for the written portion of practical exams.
Previously, examiners present at centres had the authority to award full marks. This system sometimes allowed preferential marking or recommendations to influence results. The Punjab Education department has now removed this discretion to ensure fair assessment.
Under the revised policy, the 30 marks for practical exams will be divided into two parts. The written portion of the exam will be marked directly by the respective education board. This centralised approach ensures uniformity and reduces potential bias.
Examiners at the centres will continue to assess viva and practical performance. However, their authority to award full marks has been significantly reduced. This move is intended to make practical exam results more merit-based and transparent.
The new policy applies to practical examinations in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Studies. The Task Force Committee for Boards Chairman, Muzammil Mahmood, said that merely formal or oral practicals will no longer be accepted.
Marks will now be awarded strictly based on students’ performance. Punjab Education officials said the system aims to improve fairness, transparency, and credibility in the evaluation process. Students and teachers are advised to follow the new guidelines carefully.
The centralised marking system also ensures that all students are evaluated under the same standards, regardless of the examination centre. This change reflects the Punjab Education department’s commitment to enhancing the quality of assessment and maintaining high standards across the province.
Officials believe the new system will reduce complaints related to biased marking and increase trust in the evaluation process. The Punjab Education boards are expected to implement this system starting from the upcoming practical examinations.
