Punjab Strengthens CCD to Combat Crimes Targeting Women and Children

The Punjab cabinet has approved new powers for the Crime Control Department (CCD) to investigate crimes against women and children. The decision, announced on Thursday, aims to strengthen law enforcement and ensure better protection for vulnerable groups across the province.

Under the new directives, the CCD will establish a Special Sexual Offences Investigation Unit (SSOIU) within its Investigation Wing. The unit will have dedicated officers and all necessary resources to handle sensitive cases efficiently. Previously, the SSOIU operated within the Investigation Wing, focusing on inquiries involving women and children under existing protocols.

The CCD will now operate through 263 units across Punjab. More than 5,000 additional personnel will be deployed to support the department’s enhanced investigative capabilities. Officials say this expansion will allow the CCD to respond more quickly to cases and improve overall investigation quality.

Authorities emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to ensure crimes against women and children are addressed promptly. By centralizing resources and expertise within the CCD, the government aims to provide a more coordinated and effective response to sexual offences and other related crimes.

The Punjab cabinet highlighted that the CCD’s strengthened mandate will help maintain public confidence in law enforcement. With dedicated units and increased manpower, authorities hope to ensure faster case resolutions, better protection for victims, and stricter enforcement of laws.

This step also aligns with broader efforts to modernize the police and investigative system in Punjab. By empowering the CCD and providing it with specialized units like the SSOIU, the government aims to create a safer environment for women and children in the province.
