Punjab Bans Hose Pipes Amid Drought Fears

In response to intensifying drought concerns, the Punjab government has announced an immediate ban on the use of hose pipes across the province as part of sweeping water conservation efforts.

The directive, issued by Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, Director General of the Environmental Protection Department, prohibits the use of hose pipes for activities such as residential car washing and water spraying. The restrictions also apply to government institutions and commercial buildings, reflecting the seriousness of the crisis.

“This measure is essential to ensure water security for the future,” Dr. Sheikh stated, warning that violators will face strict penalties. Authorities say enforcement teams will monitor compliance across public and private sectors.

Water experts have long raised alarms about Pakistan’s looming water crisis, and Punjab — the country’s most densely populated province — remains particularly vulnerable due to climate change and surging demand.

The hose pipe ban marks the latest in a series of conservation measures being rolled out across the country as Pakistan grapples with increasingly complex resource management challenges.
