Punjab Approves Significant Hike in Traffic Violation Fines

The Punjab government has approved a tenfold increase in traffic fines as part of a comprehensive strategy to improve road discipline across the province. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, which focused on traffic management and safety reforms.

One of the key measures announced includes the registration of criminal cases against parents or guardians of underage drivers. Authorities will also take strict legal action, including filing FIRs, against individuals involved in one-wheeling and reckless driving.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed the immediate removal of road obstructions, particularly on major arteries such as Bedian Road. In addition, the provincial government plans to redesign 372 traffic points across Punjab and 77 within Lahore to help reduce congestion.

To promote transparency, the new policy mandates that all traffic challans must be backed by photo or video evidence. Hefty fines will be imposed on drivers caught using mobile phones while driving, and action will be taken against vehicles operating with broken or non-functional headlights.

The meeting also approved the installation of digital roadside screens to provide real-time alerts about traffic congestion to commuters.

A proposal was reviewed to divide the traffic police into five specialized units, and discussions included introducing new uniforms and equipping personnel with modern patrol tools.

“There’s still no visible improvement. We must act now,” remarked CM Maryam Nawaz during the meeting.
