Pakistan is witnessing a sharp rise in travel costs after the recent increase in fuel prices. The impact is now clearly visible in the Public Transport sector, where fares have increased significantly across the country. Commuters are facing higher expenses for daily and intercity travel.
Reports show that intercity bus fares have risen by up to 65 percent. This increase has placed an additional financial burden on passengers. Many travelers now have to pay between Rs1,000 and Rs2,500 more for the same routes.
Under the revised fare system, several major routes have become more expensive. The fare from Lahore to Islamabad has increased from Rs3,000 to Rs4,000. Similarly, travel from Lahore to Peshawar now costs Rs4,600 instead of Rs3,500.
Other routes have also seen major changes. The Lahore to Sargodha fare has jumped from Rs1,550 to Rs2,550. Travel between Lahore and Faisalabad now costs Rs2,350, compared to the earlier Rs1,350.
Passengers traveling to southern cities are facing even higher increases. The fare from Lahore to Karachi has risen from Rs8,600 to Rs12,000. Meanwhile, Lahore to Hyderabad now costs Rs13,000, up from Rs9,200.
Tourist and regional routes have not been spared either. The fare from Lahore to Murree has increased to Rs4,500 from Rs3,300. Similarly, travel from Lahore to Multan now costs Rs3,700.
Transport operators have defended these increases. They say rising fuel costs are the main reason behind the changes. According to them, the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices has made operations expensive. In addition, the cost of spare parts and maintenance has also gone up.
Operators warned that without these fare adjustments, running services would become difficult. They stated that continuing operations at old rates could lead to financial losses. In some cases, services might even be suspended if costs are not covered.
The rising Public Transport fares are expected to affect a large number of people. Daily commuters, students, and workers will feel the pressure the most. Many people rely on Public Transport for affordable travel.

Experts believe these increases could contribute to higher inflation. As transport costs rise, the prices of goods and services may also increase. This situation may further strain household budgets across Pakistan.
