PTI to challenge PECA Act in court

On Tuesday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced its intention to challenge the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (PECA) Act in court.

Speaking to the media outside Parliament House, Senate Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz criticized the rushed passage of the law. “The PECA Act was hastily approved in parliament,” Faraz stated. “Parliament has lost its credibility, and lawmakers have become insignificant,” he added.

Faraz also expressed concern over the treatment of the opposition, noting that “The opposition leader was not permitted to speak in parliament. The opposition was completely disregarded, which raises serious concerns.”

PTI leader Ali Zafar also condemned the process, claiming that the law was aimed at journalists and whistle-blowers. “The law was passed forcefully in parliament without addressing our [PTI’s] concerns,” Zafar said. “This bill specifically targets journalists and those who seek to reveal the truth. We will challenge the PECA Act in court,” he concluded.
