Omar Ayub Khan, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, submitted the names to Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in a formal letter, urging immediate action under Article 213(2B) of the Constitution.
The PTI nominees include four MNAs — Asad Qaiser, Gohar Ali Khan, Hamid Raza, and Sardar Latif Khosa — and two Senators, Shibli Faraz and Allama Raja Nasir.
Ayub emphasized the urgency of the appointments, pointing out that the CEC’s term has already ended and a successor must be named promptly.
As per the Constitution, if consensus is not reached between the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader on three candidates for each post, both are allowed to submit separate names to a 12-member bipartisan parliamentary committee. This committee, formed by the Speaker, will then select the final nominees to forward to the President of Pakistan.
The delay in appointment has raised concerns about the electoral oversight mechanism ahead of future polls.
