PTI leaders at Islamabad Jalsa demand Imran Khan's release or face nationwide protests

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders have set a two-week deadline for the release of their imprisoned leader, Imran Khan, during a major rally held in Islamabad’s Sangjani locality. The event was marked by clashes between PTI supporters and police.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and other PTI leaders addressed the rally, threatening direct action if Khan was not released within the specified timeframe, and stated that Gandapur would personally lead the efforts if necessary.

The rally, which had been rescheduled twice due to revoked permissions, was held under a no-objection certificate (NOC) despite heightened security and roadblocks imposed by authorities in the capital.

PTI leaders demanded the immediate release of their jailed founder and warned of potential violence if their demands were not met. Firebrand politicians criticized both the military establishment and the incumbent government over the numerous cases against Khan.

Despite logistical challenges and roadblocks, the rally attracted a significant turnout. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar emphasized Khan’s leadership and criticized the administration for obstructing access to the event.

Participants faced complications as the Islamabad district administration imposed a 7 pm deadline for the rally’s conclusion. Despite this, the rally continued, resulting in confrontations between PTI supporters and police.

Imran Khan has been imprisoned for a year but remains a significant political force. His influence persists through media and social media, with his supporters and party leaders continuing to advocate for his release. Khan has been jailed on multiple charges since August 5, 2023. Although he has faced severe sentences, recent legal victories, including the dismissal of some sentences and a UN panel’s declaration of his detention as arbitrary, have yet to result in his release.
