PTA Warns Public Against Sharing Fingerprints for Free SIM Offers

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid giving their thumb impressions or fingerprints to anyone offering free SIM cards or financial aid.

The authority warned that fraudsters often deceive people—especially women—into sharing their biometric data, which is then used to activate SIMs involved in criminal activities.

As part of its digital safety campaign, the PTA reminded the public that handing over their SIM cards to others is illegal.

In a related effort, Meta, in collaboration with PTA and educational platform EYEYAH!, launched an awareness campaign titled “Is This Legit?” to educate Pakistanis about common online scams. The initiative, part of a broader Asia-Pacific program, highlights seven major scam types through interactive and gamified learning tools.

PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman praised the partnership, emphasizing the authority’s ongoing commitment to building a secure digital environment. Meta’s Head of Public Policy for Pakistan, Dania Mukhtar, said the campaign aims to empower users by helping them spot red flags and avoid scams online.
