The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has emphasized that the responsible use of social media is a collective national duty, urging citizens to act with care and restraint while engaging on digital platforms. The authority advised users to avoid sharing, endorsing, or amplifying illegal, hateful, defamatory, or false content, stressing that online behavior has real-world consequences.
In its statement, PTA said the unchecked spread of misleading or harmful material, particularly content targeting state institutions, the judiciary, or private individuals, undermines public trust and damages social harmony. Such practices, the authority noted, contribute to polarization and misinformation, creating confusion and instability within society.
The regulator highlighted that misuse of social media platforms does not only harm individuals or institutions but also weakens Pakistan’s broader digital ecosystem. According to PTA, irresponsible online activity erodes confidence in digital spaces, discourages constructive dialogue, and affects the overall credibility of information circulating on the internet.
PTA reiterated that freedom of expression is a fundamental constitutional right, but it is not absolute. The authority stressed that this freedom must be exercised within legal, moral, and ethical boundaries. It said that responsible expression strengthens democracy, while reckless use of digital platforms can lead to serious societal harm.
Referring to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, PTA warned that unlawful online activities are punishable offences. These include spreading fake news, hate speech, harassment, defamation, and content that incites violence or targets institutions. The authority cautioned that individuals involved in such activities may face legal action.
PTA urged citizens to verify information before sharing it online and to promote respectful, fact-based discussions on social media. It said collective responsibility, digital awareness, and adherence to the law are essential to maintaining a safe, trustworthy, and productive online environment for everyone.
