The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning to the public against using illegal and foreign SIM cards. The regulator said such cards can put users at serious security, financial, and legal risk.
In its advisory, PTA stated that making calls or sending messages through unregistered or foreign SIM cards is prohibited. The authority explained that these SIM cards can compromise personal information and financial data. Many illegal or foreign SIMs are linked to fraud, identity theft, and unlawful communication.
PTA warned that individuals using illegally obtained SIM cards may unintentionally take part in illegal activities. This could make users legally accountable if the cards are used to transmit unauthorized messages or engage in criminal acts.
The authority emphasized that SIM cards purchased from unauthorized sources, without proper biometric verification, or through outsourcing arrangements should not be used. Citizens were advised to ensure that all SIM cards are legally acquired and registered in their own names.
According to PTA, foreign SIM cards operating in Pakistan bypass local regulatory controls. This increases the risk of data misuse and financial exploitation for users.
This warning is part of PTA’s ongoing efforts to prevent telecom-related fraud and unlawful communication. The authority said strict action may be taken against anyone found using illegal or unregistered SIM cards.
PTA urged the public to follow telecom regulations to protect personal data. The regulator stressed that lawful use of mobile connections is essential for security and accountability.
