PTA Warns Against Use and Sale of Unregistered Mobile Phones in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an official warning to the public about the legal and security risks associated with the use and sale of unregistered mobile phones in the country. According to the PTA notice, mobile devices not registered through the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS) are subject to legal action under current laws.

Only mobile phones that are properly registered through DIRBS and have cleared all necessary taxes with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) are considered legal for use in Pakistan.
Legal Framework
The Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 criminalizes the sale, purchase, or promotion of unregistered, duplicate, cloned, or JV (joint venture) phones, also known locally as patched phones. Violating this law can result in prosecution.
FIA and PTA Efforts to Combat Illegal Trade
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), in collaboration with the PTA, is actively conducting operations to target the illegal mobile phone trade. These operations include:
