The telecom regulator in Pakistan suspended mobile broadband services on May 9 in response to the violent protests that erupted following Imran Khan’s arrest.

PTI supporters staged violent protests against military and government buildings in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar, prompting authorities to take control by suspending mobile internet services and blocking access to major social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

The PTA confirmed today that mobile internet service in the country would be suspended until further notice, but that broadband internet service would remain available.

The telecom regulator stated that it had not received any new orders from authorities regarding the restoration of mobile internet services since the suspension was ordered by the Ministry of Interior.

On Thursday, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah announced that mobile internet services would be restored within 36 hours.
