PTA Addresses Claims of Telecom Sector Data Breach

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has addressed media reports regarding the alleged leak of subscriber data circulating online. In its statement, PTA clarified that it neither maintains nor manages subscriber information, which is exclusively handled by licensed telecom operators in the country.

According to PTA, an initial review of the reported datasets revealed that the information includes family details, travel histories, vehicle registrations, and copies of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs). This suggests that the data may have been compiled from various external sources rather than originating from telecom operators. PTA further highlighted that regular security audits of the licensed telecom sector have shown no signs of breaches or unauthorized access.

As part of its ongoing efforts to combat illegal activities, PTA has already blocked 1,372 websites, mobile applications, and social media platforms involved in selling or disseminating personal data. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior has established a special inquiry committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the protection of citizens’ information while emphasizing that telecom operators remain fully compliant with data protection measures under their licenses.
