The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked 184 websites and mobile applications linked to gambling and betting activities, according to a written statement submitted by the Cabinet Division in the National Assembly.
The statement, presented during a recent session, confirmed that while the PTA has taken action to restrict access to these platforms, prosecuting individuals involved in gambling lies outside its legal authority. The division further clarified that relevant institutions have been instructed to avoid entering into any agreements with companies associated with gambling practices.
It was also highlighted that the PTA’s capacity to remove or block unlawful online content is restricted by existing laws and regulatory frameworks.
In a related development, the PTA previously issued a public advisory warning against the sharing of illegal content on social media. Emphasizing the importance of responsible digital behavior, the authority reminded users that while freedom of expression is protected, misusing this right for unlawful purposes will face legal consequences.
Under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, sharing blasphemous material, hate speech, false propaganda, obscene or immoral content, and inciting violence is a criminal offense, punishable by law. The PTA reaffirmed its commitment to upholding digital laws and protecting national values online
