PSL 11 Introduces Policy Shift for Teams

The Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) season has introduced a significant update to its playing conditions, allowing team captains to submit two separate lineups before the toss.

This change aims to minimize the advantage of winning the toss and was first implemented during the opening match in Lahore between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen. Captains Shaheen Shah Afridi and Marnus Labuschagne submitted two potential XIs to the match referee, finalizing their playing XI only after the toss outcome.

The rule, outlined in Clause 1.2.1 of the PSL playing conditions, permits each captain to provide two written lineups prior to the toss. Each team sheet must list 11 players and may include up to four substitute fielders. After the toss, the captain confirms one lineup by signing the chosen sheet. Once finalized, no changes to the XI are allowed without the opposing captain’s approval.

This adjustment is designed to reduce the impact of dew in night matches, which can make the ball slippery, hinder spinners, and alter game dynamics. Teams can now adjust their strategy based on match conditions—for instance, a side batting first might select an extra fast bowler, while a team bowling second could strengthen its batting lineup.

In the season opener, dew was not a factor, as wind and cloud cover kept conditions dry. Lahore Qalandars began their title defense with a commanding 69-run victory over Hyderabad Kingsmen. Batting first, the Qalandars posted 199 for six in 20 overs, led by Fakhar Zaman’s 53 off 39 balls. Mohammad Naeem scored 30, Haseebullah Khan remained unbeaten on 40, and Sikandar Raza added 24 off 10 deliveries.

In reply, Hyderabad Kingsmen were bowled out for 130, with Lahore’s pace attack—Haris Rauf, Ubaid Shah, Shaheen Afridi, and Mustafizur Rahman—dominating, complemented by Sikandar Raza’s contributions with the ball.
