Private schools in Punjab have opposed the government’s decision to extend summer vacations until September 1, calling it unnecessary.
The All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association released a statement criticizing the move. They said this decision could negatively affect students’ learning and exam preparation.
On August 7, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced that all public and private schools in the province would remain closed until September due to the heatwave. He said the step was taken to protect students from extreme weather.
However, private schools argue that many areas in Punjab are now seeing lower temperatures, and reopening schools with safety measures is possible. They also highlighted that schools in Islamabad reopened on August 4 and that other provinces did not extend summer breaks.
The association warned that a nearly three-month school closure would disrupt the academic calendar. They believe that students, especially those preparing for board exams, will suffer due to continued delays.
According to the association, private schools are ready to reopen under strict health guidelines. They proposed a phased reopening, starting with bdoard classes, to reduce academic loss.
They also called on the government to reconsider the extension, stating that education cannot be paused for so long without consequences. Some schools have already completed safety preparations to welcome students back to classrooms.
Teachers and parents have also expressed concerns. Many believe that learning gaps caused by the extended break will be hard to fill later.
While health and safety remain priorities, school administrators feel that solutions can be found to balance both concerns.
The final decision rests with the provincial authorities. However, pressure from private schools may lead to a policy review in the coming days.
