The Punjab government is gearing up to offer sentence reductions and early releases to elderly and female inmates. Summaries outlining these measures have been prepared and are set to be presented to the provincial cabinet for approval before Eid-ul-Azha.
As per the proposed plan, male prisoners aged over 70 and female prisoners aged over 60, who have served at least two-thirds of their sentences, will be eligible for release. Furthermore, female inmates with children under the age of five, who have completed two-thirds of their sentences, will also benefit from this initiative.

Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal stressed that the reduction of sentences and early release would be contingent upon the prisoners maintaining good conduct during their time in custody and having completed two-thirds of their sentences.
These measures were discussed during a visit to Lahore Central Jail by Home Secretary Mengal and Prisons Inspector General Mian Farooq Nazir. Both officials interacted with inmates and evaluated the facilities provided to them.
