As Princess Martha Louise of Norway prepares to marry Shaman Durek Verrett on August 31, 2024, the couple has addressed the public criticism they’ve faced since announcing their relationship in 2019. Martha, who stepped back from her royal duties in 2022 to focus on alternative practices, revealed to Hello Magazine that she was unaware of the extent of racism until meeting Verrett. “Since I met Durek, the criticism has only intensified,” she said.

Verrett, who will be the first Black man to marry into a European royal family, shared the emotional impact of the criticism, stating, “Initially, it was very painful. I experienced a meltdown and breakdown.”

Verrett emphasized the spiritual importance of their marriage, saying, “Sealing our union in front of the universe is a profound spiritual declaration.” The wedding, set in Norway’s breathtaking fjords and mountains, will be attended by 350 guests, including members of the Norwegian royal family.
