President Asks PM for Caretaker PM by Aug 12

President Dr. Arif Alvi has directed both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly to nominate a suitable candidate for the position of Caretaker Prime Minister by August 12, 2023.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, President Alvi emphasized that according to Article 224A of the Constitution, it is the responsibility of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly to put forward the name of a prospective care-taker prime minister within three days of the dissolution of the National Assembly.

President Alvi further explained that as per the proviso to Article 224 (1A) of the Constitution, the President is responsible for appointing the care-taker prime minister in consultation with the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly.

He recalled that the Prime Minister had advised him on August 9 to dissolve the National Assembly under Article 58 (1) of the Constitution, which he approved, leading to the dissolution of the assembly on the same day.

In accordance with the provisions of Article 224 (1A) of the Constitution of Pakistan, the President outlined that the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly should propose a suitable candidate for the role of care-taker prime minister by no later than August 12, 2023
