Is Jalil Abbas Jilani the New Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan?

The ongoing discussions in Islamabad revolve around the selection of the next interim Prime Minister as Pakistan’s National Assembly is on the verge of a resolution. Key members of the ruling PDM coalition, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP leader Asif Zardari, are actively engaged in consultations to agree on a suitable candidate.

Various names from the realm of politics and economics have been suggested, yet no final decision had been reached as of late Tuesday. Former Pakistani diplomat Abdul Basit took to social media, announcing Ambassador (retd) Jalil Abbas Jilani as the chosen candidate for the caretaker Prime Minister role.

Jalil Abbas Jilani, a seasoned diplomat and former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, comes from a family renowned for its notable bureaucrats. His diplomatic career includes serving as Pakistan’s representative to the US, Belgium, Luxemburg, the EU, and Australia.

He possesses expertise in South Asian affairs and has held significant roles within SAARC, including acting High Commissioner to India and Director (India) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As the decision-making process continues, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to have a final meeting with Leader of the Opposition Raja Riaz to solidify the choice for the interim PM and the subsequent cabinet members.
