PPL Announces New Hydrocarbon Discovery In Sindh Province

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a major hydrocarbon discovery from its exploratory well Sawan North Deep-1 ST-1 (SND-1 ST-1) in Khairpur, Sindh. The company shared the development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday.

The hydrocarbon discovery was made through the Sawan Joint Venture. The partners include UEP Beta as operator with 25% working interest, PPL with 30%, PPL Europe E&P Limited with 10%, Prime AEP Limited with 30%, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited with 5%.

The SND-1 ST-1 well was spud-in on September 16, 2024, and drilled to a measured depth of 14,017 feet. The main objective was to explore the hydrocarbon potential of the Lower Goru Formation, specifically the A-Interval Sands.

Post-completion testing confirmed gas flow from the identified intervals at around 0.30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), with a flowing wellhead pressure of about 100 psig at 128/64” choke.

This hydrocarbon discovery is the first in the Sawan area to use a sequence stratigraphic (trap) evaluation methodology. This innovative approach has validated the geological concept and opened new exploration opportunities in the region.

PPL emphasized that the hydrocarbon discovery highlights the potential of the Sawan region and demonstrates the effectiveness of advanced exploration techniques. The success will guide future drilling projects and enhance energy production in Pakistan.

Officials said the discovery contributes to Pakistan’s energy security and strengthens domestic hydrocarbon resources. The company aims to continue its exploration efforts in Sindh to uncover additional reserves.
