Two new polio cases have been reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC). The infected children come from Tank district and North Waziristan. This development adds to growing concerns about the spread of the virus in the region.
NEOC described the current situation as “alarming” due to the continued circulation of the polio virus in high-risk areas. Southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains the epicenter of polio outbreaks, making eradication efforts more challenging.
The rise in polio cases highlights the need for urgent action. Authorities have announced a nationwide anti-polio vaccination campaign set to begin next month. Parents are urged to ensure that every child under five years old receives the polio vaccine during this drive. The campaign aims to stop the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable children.
Earlier this year, a five-month-old child from Lakki Marwat was also diagnosed with polio. With the two recent cases, the total number of polio cases in Pakistan for 2025 has reached 23. This increase raises fears of a setback in the country’s long-standing battle to eliminate polio.
Health officials emphasize that vaccination is key to preventing new polio cases. They stress that public cooperation and awareness are critical to the success of the upcoming vaccination drive.
Pakistan has made significant progress in reducing polio cases over the years. However, persistent outbreaks in regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa threaten to reverse these gains. Continuous efforts and timely vaccination remain vital in the fight against polio.
