Police Arrest Hundreds of Protesting Students Across Punjab in Private College Case

Punjab Police have taken extensive action in response to protests over an alleged rape case involving a female student at a private college. On Thursday, hundreds of students and individuals accused of vandalism were arrested across various cities in Punjab, particularly in Lahore, where protests erupted following the unconfirmed allegations.

Lahore was the focal point of the unrest, with protesters vandalizing properties, setting fire to motorcycles, and clashing with police. A case registered by Sub-Inspector Usman Akbar at the Harbanspura police station has named 200 to 250 unidentified individuals involved in the disturbances. According to the FIR, protesters attacked the police with petrol bombs, leading to the burning of six motorcycles and substantial damage to the college. So far, police have detained 24 individuals linked to the vandalism.

Rawalpindi: Protests outside a private college in Rawalpindi turned violent, resulting in the arrest of over 150 students. Authorities emphasized that acts of vandalism or arson would not be tolerated and warned of strict action against those damaging public property.

Gujarat: In Gujarat, police arrested 92 students implicated in violent protests. The arrested individuals were transferred to various police stations as part of the ongoing crackdown, with law enforcement officials stating that further arrests are anticipated.

Jhelum: Severe unrest in Jhelum led to the arrest of 49 students for vandalizing a private college and clashing with police. The students were taken to Thana City police station, with a case filed against 49 named individuals and 400 unknown suspects, charging them with rioting, arson, and resisting police action. Concerned families gathered outside the police station, anxious about their children’s situation, urging for leniency.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif addressed the unrest, stating that the individual responsible for spreading false rumors and inciting violence has been arrested. She clarified that the allegations were fabricated, noting that the girl involved, a former student, is now happily married. She assured that actions would be taken against those disseminating misinformation.
