PML-N urges measures against Justice Ahsan

Expressing dissatisfaction with the resignations of high-ranking jurists criticized for their rulings against PML-N leaders, the party is now demanding accountability and legal action against Supreme Court Justice Ijazul Ahsan. Following Justice Ahsan’s resignation, PML-N’s central information secretary, Marriyum Aurangzeb, asserted that stepping down was an acknowledgment of the allegations against him. According to her, resignation alone could not absolve the judge from the “terrible actions” against elected leaders, democracy, and the Constitution. She insisted that a resignation would not bury the numerous controversial decisions and references against Justice Ahsan.

Marriyum Aurangzeb raised a crucial question, asking why any Supreme Court judge should be exempted from rigorous accountability when even a three-time elected prime minister like Nawaz Sharif willingly subjected himself, his family, and his political party to the accountability process. She criticized Justice Ahsan for, in her view, making a mockery of justice, the Supreme Court, and the position of a top court judge to target, persecute, and victimize Nawaz Sharif.

According to Marriyum Aurangzeb, individuals like Justice Ahsan and former Supreme Court judge Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, who resigned a day earlier, were responsible for economic destruction, massive unemployment, and excruciating inflation in Pakistan. She demanded that these individuals answer to the people for their “deplorable” actions, claiming that they used their power, position, and influence to target Nawaz Sharif. She contended that their resignations were proof of their guilt in committing “horrendous crimes against the nation and Constitution.”

Marriyum Aurangzeb labeled Justice Ahsan and Mazahar Ali Naqvi as “black sheep” causing institutional turmoil with their actions. However, she argued that their exit was strengthening the Supreme Court. She also criticized the Peshawar High Court’s decision to reinstate PTI’s electoral symbol, the ‘cricket bat,’ despite what she described as the party “grossly violating” Election Commission rules and code of conduct.

Turning her attention to PTI founding chairman Imran Khan, Marriyum Aurangzeb accused him of favoring rigged and manipulated processes of selection instead of democratic polls. She alleged that Imran’s premiership and the PTI government were made possible through rigging, particularly through the manipulation of the Results Transmission System (RTS). While critical of the decision, she did not comment on the PTI’s electoral symbol.

PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah also weighed in, stating that all parties should be given the concession of not holding internal polls. He argued that the Peshawar High Court’s decision favored rule violations and was a defeat for the law, claiming it proved favoritism toward Imran Khan. Sanaullah suggested that the decision encouraged perpetrators of violence on May 9 of the previous year.
