Heavy rain and strong winds paralyzed life across Karachi on Thursday, leading to widespread flooding, traffic congestion, and vehicle damage, with ongoing development projects aggravating the situation.
The Red Line and Karimabad underpasses emerged as major problem areas, leaving thousands of commuters stuck for hours. Streets and residential neighborhoods were submerged, while overflowing drains and sewers worsened the flooding.
Social media videos showed motorcycles and cars trapped in potholes, prompting authorities to warn motorists to avoid certain routes.
According to the Meteorological Department, the rainfall was caused by a strong western weather system entering Pakistan from Balochistan, bringing light to heavy rain across the city and hail in areas like Mauripur and Clifton. Maximum wind speeds reached 38 km/h. Rainfall recorded included Nazimabad: 6.69mm, Keamari: 5.6mm, Saadi Town: 4.8mm, Gulistan-e-Johar: 4.42mm, and DHA: 3.3mm. Rainbows were seen in several locations after the showers.
Authorities have urged residents to take precautions and avoid non-essential travel, as the system is expected to affect Karachi and rural Sindh until April 4.
Meanwhile, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) said it successfully managed the rainfall’s impact, ensuring proper drainage and reducing disruption despite the challenges posed by ongoing construction projects.
