The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for northern regions, cautioning that Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa face an elevated risk of flooding due to soaring temperatures and an incoming weather system.
The PMD’s Research and Development Division noted that persistent heat is rapidly melting snow and glaciers, significantly increasing the potential for GLOF and flash floods in vulnerable valleys. The warning covers the current and coming week, urging local authorities and residents to stay alert.

Communities in glaciated regions are particularly at risk, where even minor weather shifts can trigger serious flood events. The PMD has called for heightened monitoring and timely response to mitigate possible damage.
Authorities are advised to prepare contingency plans and ensure that early warning systems are in place to safeguard lives and infrastructure in the affected areas.
