5G Closer Than Ever as Government Unveils Telecom Strategy (1)

The government has prepared a five-year roadmap for the Telecom sector on the prime minister’s instructions. This plan is supported by a broader national connectivity strategy that will run until 2030.

IT Minister Shaza Fatima shared these details during a recent meeting of the National Assembly standing committee. She said the prime minister will formally launch the connectivity plan in the coming weeks. The plan aims to improve digital access across the country.

The minister told the committee that work is already underway ahead of the launch of 5G services. She confirmed that two major Telecom companies have merged. This step is expected to strengthen the market and improve service delivery.

During the meeting, Shaza Fatima also briefed members on projects approved by the Universal Service Fund. She said USF has approved projects worth Rs. 13 billion during the current year. These projects focus on improving connectivity in underserved areas. The committee asked for a detailed briefing on these projects in the next session.

The committee chairman raised concerns over the performance of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. He said the situation on the ground does not match official reports. Members stressed that the 5G auction should be held as early as possible. They said the focus should remain on service quality, not high dollar-based fees.

Power supply issues at Telecom towers were also discussed. Committee members said these issues are affecting network quality. The IT minister responded that many countries are outsourcing Telecom towers. She added that outsourcing is the only practical solution to resolve power and maintenance problems. The committee summoned tower companies and USF officials to the next meeting.

The meeting also reviewed progress on IT park projects. The project director said the Request for Proposal for the Karachi IT Park is near completion. The tender will be issued by the end of this month. Talks with the EXIM Bank are ongoing, and the contract is expected within three months.

On the Islamabad IT Park, officials said work is progressing quickly. Around 98 percent of the structure is complete. The minister said 80 percent of the total work has been finished so far. The project director said efforts are underway to complete the project by January 2026.
