Pope Leo XIV, born Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States, was elected on Thursday as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, succeeding Pope Francis, who passed away last month after a prolonged illness. With Prevost being a Peruvian citizen due to his extensive missionary work in Peru, his papacy marks the first time in history that an American has ascended to the papacy.
