Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Cairo during the D-8 Summit to discuss enhancing the bilateral relationship between Pakistan and Indonesia. The two leaders focused on political, economic, and trade cooperation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining close communication between their nations.
Prime Minister Sharif congratulated President Widodo on his recent inauguration and expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s role as a reliable trade partner. He highlighted the crucial import of palm oil from Indonesia to meet Pakistan’s edible oil needs. The leaders agreed to continue working on strengthening ties, particularly in economic and trade sectors.

A key topic during the discussion was Pakistan’s desire to further its relationship with ASEAN. Prime Minister Sharif thanked Indonesia for supporting Pakistan’s bid for Sectoral Partner status in ASEAN, with hopes that Indonesia’s backing will lead to Pakistan becoming a full Dialogue Partner in the organization.
The two leaders also reiterated their unwavering support for Palestine, advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza and a peaceful resolution based on the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Prime Minister Sharif invited President Widodo to visit Pakistan, an invitation that was accepted.
