“Iran and Pakistan have consistently stood by each other during difficult times. Our relationship is now more resilient and meaningful,” the prime minister stated.

Reflecting on his interactions with the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Sharif paid tribute to the fallen leader as a “visionary and farsighted” statesman. “Hosting him in Pakistan shortly before his tragic passing remains one of my cherished memories. Together, we vowed to deepen our bilateral ties — and progress has indeed followed,” he said.

The prime minister is visiting Iran at the invitation of newly-elected President Masoud Pezeshkian. He described the visit’s purpose as an opportunity to express appreciation for Iran’s support during Pakistan’s standoff with India. Sharif maintained that “India imposed war on Pakistan,” which was met with a “decisive and calibrated” response in accordance with international law.

Although India rejected Iran’s mediation offer, PM Sharif lauded Tehran’s sincere efforts. He commended both President Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi for their “dedication to regional peace,” calling Araqchi a seasoned diplomat who has managed “complex geopolitical issues with statesmanship.”

Solidarity on Gaza and Kashmir

The Pakistani premier also voiced strong opposition to Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza, declaring solidarity with Iran on the issue. “Pakistan and Iran are united against the genocidal war in Gaza and will remain steadfast in supporting the oppressed,” he said.

Sharif further highlighted Kashmir and Palestine as the “two unresolved tragedies of the Muslim world,” stressing that peace in the region is impossible without addressing the rights and aspirations of their peoples.

Boosting Trade and Border Development

On the economic front, the prime minister emphasized the shared destiny of Pakistan and Iran, noting their nearly 900-kilometre-long border. He revealed that both countries have signed multiple MoUs focused on development in Pakistan’s Balochistan and Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan provinces.

“Our bilateral trade volume is currently around $3 billion. We have a clear vision to raise this to $10 billion in the coming years. Negotiations for a free trade agreement are underway to support this goal,” Sharif said, underscoring the importance of long-term economic engagement.

Support for Peaceful Iranian Nuclear Program

PM Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s support for Iran’s right to pursue a peaceful nuclear programme, urging the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). “Diplomacy is the only path to sustainable peace. I am hopeful the ongoing indirect talks between Iran and the U.S. will lead to positive outcomes,” he added.
