PM Shehbaz has praised his government’s economic team after Pakistan recorded a $2.1 billion current account surplus. This is the country’s first annual surplus in 14 years and the largest in over two decades.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Shehbaz called the development a “historic milestone.” He said the surplus was the result of strong remittances, rising exports, and key reforms in the economy.

“Alhamdulillah! A historic milestone,” he wrote. “For the first time in 14 years, Pakistan has posted a $2.1 billion surplus. It is also the largest in 22 years.”

The prime minister credited the confidence of overseas Pakistanis for this positive outcome. He noted that their trust in Pakistan’s economy has played a major role in this turnaround.

He also acknowledged the efforts of his economic team. PM Shehbaz said their “tireless work” and “clear strategy” had helped guide the country in the right direction.

“This achievement shows what determination, focused policies, and public-private cooperation can do,” he added.

The surplus came at the end of the 2024–25 fiscal year. It reflects a major improvement compared to past years, where Pakistan faced large deficits.

Analysts say a surge in remittances and export growth contributed to this positive trend. Structural reforms supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also helped.

Textile and IT exports grew steadily, while remittances reached record highs. A reduction in the services deficit further improved the balance.

The current account surplus also strengthened Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves. According to official figures, the reserves have now crossed $19 billion.

Despite the good news, experts warn that the challenge will be to maintain this progress. Rising imports and other pressures could impact future performance.

Still, for now, PM Shehbaz and his team are celebrating a rare and significant economic success.
