Ashgabat Meeting PM Shehbaz and Erdogan Focus on Regional Connectivity

PM Shehbaz held a key meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the Ashgabat International Conference. The discussion focused on Pakistan–Turkey relations, regional issues, and major global developments. The meeting was part of the prime minister’s wider diplomatic activities during his visit to Turkmenistan.

Both leaders noted that the partnership between Pakistan and Turkey is rooted in shared values, mutual trust, and longstanding friendship. They agreed that these strong foundations create new opportunities for cooperation in several important areas.

Leaders Reaffirm Strong Bilateral Ties

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz highlighted the historic and brotherly relations between the two countries. He said these ties continue to strengthen through regular high-level contact. The prime minister expressed satisfaction over the growing engagement between the leadership of both nations throughout the year.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in defense, energy, investment, and other priority sectors. PM Shehbaz said Pakistan would implement all decisions agreed upon during the recent Pak–Turkey Joint Ministerial Commission. He welcomed Turkey’s increasing interest in Pakistan’s energy, petroleum, and mining sectors. He also invited Turkish companies to explore investment opportunities in Pakistan’s power distribution network.

Both leaders agreed that early implementation of bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding would support progress in these sectors.

Focus on Regional Connectivity and Trade

A major part of the discussion centered on regional connectivity. PM Shehbaz stressed that restoring the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul rail link was important for boosting trade and improving people-to-people contact. He said improved connectivity would strengthen economic integration across the region.

During the visit, the prime minister also interacted with several world leaders, including Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon. He held brief informal exchanges with Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Erdogan at different moments during the conference.

Participation in Neutrality Anniversary Forum

Earlier, the prime minister attended a ceremony at Ashgabat’s Neutrality Monument. The event marked the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s policy of permanent neutrality. World leaders laid flowers at the monument as a symbol of respect for Turkmenistan’s role in promoting peace and stability.

Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov warmly welcomed PM Shehbaz and other visiting leaders to the global forum. The event highlighted Turkmenistan’s efforts to encourage trust, cooperation, and dialogue at the regional and international levels.
