Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday to review the progress of Afghan refugee repatriation. The session aimed to evaluate ongoing efforts, address challenges, and streamline the return process.
Notably, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was absent from the meeting. Instead, KP was represented by his adviser, Muzzammil Aslam, who briefed the Prime Minister and other officials on the province’s role in facilitating refugee returns.
According to the official statement, the meeting included key federal and provincial officials responsible for refugee affairs. Discussions focused on identifying bottlenecks, ensuring proper documentation, and addressing security concerns in areas receiving returning refugees.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of coordination between federal and provincial authorities. He emphasized that the repatriation process should be safe, orderly, and dignified for Afghan nationals. “Our responsibility is to ensure that the return of Afghan refugees is transparent and well-managed,” he said.
Officials also reviewed the support being provided to returning families, including housing, healthcare, and employment opportunities. Plans were discussed to enhance infrastructure in border regions to accommodate the influx of repatriated individuals.
The meeting comes amid growing calls for regional stability and stronger cooperation with neighboring countries. Pakistan has repeatedly urged the Afghan Taliban to take concrete actions against terrorists operating in Afghanistan, linking security and refugee management closely to ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
