[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]Sony gave fans a sneak peek at some major forthcoming games at its first PlayStation Showcase in almost a year.

The livestream is normally reserved for the console manufacturer’s most important and popular releases.

The event had a lot of hype leading up to it. Big things were predicted, including a Bloodborne remake, The Last of Us: Part 3 and a Twisted Metal update.

Spoiler alert: none of these were true. The prevailing reaction seems to be “underwhelmed.”

There were few actual first-party exclusives on show, and many of the PlayStation 5 games were already well-known.

However, there were several highlights, as well as the occasional “huh” moment.

Spider-Man 2

Why not save the finest for last? Sony certainly appeared to think so, as it concluded its presentation with 12 minutes of gameplay footage from its follow-up to the 2018 PS4 success.

Control was switched between Peter Parker in a dark Venom costume with new symbiote powers and Miles Morales, who got his own PS5 launch game.

The two were spotted swinging around New York in pursuit of Dr. Curt Connors, alias the Lizard, while avoiding supervillain Kraven’s goons.

Fans were generally pleased, with the opportunity to play as both characters and the promise of a darker plot twist thanks to the new black suit.

However, the existence of the game had already been revealed, and fans had been anticipating for news of anything new from Sony’s studio.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

Possibly the worst-kept secret of the night, whispers circulated that a remake of the PlayStation 2 classic Metal Gear Solid 3 was in the works.

And it was eventually confirmed as the brief trailer finished with a glimpse of hero Solid Snake.

The game, which will also be available on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S consoles, has no set release date.

Sony also revealed that the first three Metal Gear Solid games will be available later this year as the Master Collection: Volume 1.

There was no mention of a Metal Gear Solid 4 re-master, which fans have long desired, but some speculated that it would appear in a volume two.

Project Q

Sony’s upcoming portable device was another confirmed rumour – and the basis of many memes.

Project Q is a cut-in-half DualSense controller with an 8in LCD screen wedged between.

Sony promised more information in the future, but stated that it would be able to broadcast PS5 games from your system.

Because you can accomplish this with a phone or tablet and a third-party controller attachment, many people were left wondering what was so remarkable about it.

And, given its similarities to Nintendo’s Switch and its less successful predecessor, the Wii U, the “PS U” and “Playstation Switch” jokes flew thick and fast.

Having said that, some people expressed an interest in purchasing one if the price – which has yet to be confirmed – was reasonable.

People were excited by Alan Wake 2, Phantom Blade Zero, and another Final Fantasy 16 clip. Despite the fact that the much-anticipated FF16 demo did not emerge as expected.

And the first glimpse at Dragon’s Dogma 2 was a pleasant surprise, revealing that production on the follow-up to the 2013 sleeper success was well underway.

Fans of indie games were well-served, with Journey and Night in the Woods sequels, as well as Devolver Digital’s The Plucky Squire, on display.

Resident Evil 4 Remake and Synapse for PSVR2 were both well-received, as was a free Beat Sabre upgrade that came during the showcase.

One of the most common criticisms was the lack of actual exclusive games on display.

Bungie, the Halo creator recently acquired by Sony, announced the revival of their 1994 title Marathon. However, the game will be released on additional platforms.

On the night, the term “Not actual gameplay footage” made its money.

Many of the titles featured in the showcase, like Haven Studio’s FairGame$ and Firewalk Studios’ Concord, had “cinematic” trailers but no gameplay.

Taking up a large portion of the stream with a clip from the upcoming Gran Turismo film didn’t go over well either.

Summer is typically a period for major game announcements, and there are still opportunities for businesses to reveal major new projects.

Summer Games Fest, hosted by US journalist Geoff Keighley, begins on June 8 and promises “three or four” major announcements.
