Plan to Export Meat to Malaysia Finalized

On Friday, Pakistan finalized a plan to export meat to Malaysia, aiming for $200 million in revenue. As part of the strategy, the government will grant industry status to the halal meat sector to boost exports and strengthen the national economy.

The $200 million export target is set for the next three to five years, while current exports of buffalo meat to Malaysia stand at $38,000. A high-level committee meeting, aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision, was jointly chaired by Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar Khan, Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, and Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan.

At the meeting, the final business plan for meat exports was presented, marking a significant move to expand Pakistan’s presence in the global halal meat market. Haroon Akhtar praised the collaborative efforts of all ministries and stakeholders in developing an efficient export framework, while Jam Kamal emphasized the collective contributions that shaped the plan.

The committee addressed challenges including foot-and-mouth disease, processing gaps, and logistical issues. Akhtar announced that granting industry status to the halal meat sector would enhance exports. Specific tasks with timelines have been assigned to ensure the $200 million target is met.

Additionally, financial facilitation from banks and government bodies, along with modern slaughterhouses built to Malaysian standards, will support compliance and strengthen trade potential, according to Rana Tanveer Hussain.
