PKK Announces End To Armed Struggle After Decades-Long Insurgency

In a historic move, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has declared the dissolution of its organisational structure and the conclusion of its nearly five-decade-long armed struggle against the Turkish state. The announcement was made following the group’s 12th Congress, as reported by the pro-Kurdish Firat News Agency.

The statement revealed that the practical aspects of the dissolution would be overseen by the PKK’s imprisoned founding leader, Abdullah Ocalan. The group officially stated, “We have ended the work carried out under the name of the PKK,” marking the formal closure of an organisation that had dominated Kurdish militant politics since its founding in 1978.

Over the years, the PKK shifted its focus from seeking an independent Kurdish state to demanding greater autonomy and cultural rights within Turkey. The conflict, which has caused significant casualties among Turkish security forces, PKK fighters, and civilians, has long strained Turkey’s internal stability and relations with its Western allies.

While an immediate ceasefire was declared earlier this year, Monday’s announcement appears to finalise that decision. The Turkish government has yet to issue an official response, and observers note that the durability of this dissolution will hinge on Ankara’s reaction and follow-up measures in the coming months.
